Three weeks and counting

It's now been more than three weeks since we started our bathroom remodeling project. It's not a complete makeover, but we are getting a new radiator and a new tiled shower stall. For three weeks, our guest bedroom has looked like this — full of bathroom stuff. We are eager to get it cleaned up again.

The project has been plagued by a series of surprises and errors. First we ended up ordering the wrong color tile because of a typo in an e-mail. We re-ordered and suffered a delay. Then we found out that the tile we originally wanted was not really the color we had in mind. Meanwhile the new towel-drier radiator doesn't seem to working right and may have to be replaced.

Yesterday, the glass shower enclosure panels arrived, and we discovered they weren't the ones we had ordered. The supplier said if we wanted to send them back and re-order, we'd have to wait until the end of January to get the other ones. No way. But it's okay, don't you think? Above is just a preliminary photo. The bathroom clean-up work will begin in a couple of hours, and we'll be able to move things back in.

  1. That looks fine.... i presume it is the frosted panel that is wrong.... but, where's the mirror going to hang...?
Bleedin' suppliers....it seems to be the norm these days....just shove summat in a box... it'll do!

Oh... there seems to be a fox in your spare room, too?

    1. Well, a fox or a collie. We bought it in Las Vegas many years ago. It's a hand puppet that we thought looked like our now dearly departed dog Collette.

  2. How frustrating! It would have been OK to wait if all this had been going on in the middle of summer, but showering downstairs isn't very appealing. Mind you, if you'd waited I'd have been worried that the tradesmen had moved on to other things and you'd never get them back.

  3. Shower door looks fine. But these order mixups are frustrating for you.

    1. When you are spending what seems a large amount of money and don't get what you expected, for whatever reason...

  4. Holy cow! How can these mixups keep happening? So frustrating.
But, your shower does look great :)

  5. Just imagine what it must be like to be in the remodeling/design business serving clients and having to call them with news of wrong tile, wrong enclosure, etc. Very stressful. Anyway, I think the final result looks great. Which of you is going to be in charge of keeping the clear glass panel spot-free is the question.

  6. Not knowing what you had ordered, I think this is great. I do like the color of the tiles that goes well with that of the walls. How frosty is the frosted panel?

  7. That is a lot of mix-ups for one small job .. I have redone/renovated several homes and didn't suffer that much confusion.
From this photo you are showing, it is beautiful and I would love it .. although I know that having one thing in mind and getting another, even if it is just as nice, can be disappointing not to mention annoying. You are paying these people plenty of money to do their job right ...

    1. Yes, a lot of unforeseeable mistakes. But so it goes. I think we got a good result malgré tout.

  8. I wonder how many people just go with the mis-sent items - a way to clear out unwanted stock or am I just being paranoid?

    1. In this case I think it was an honest mistake.

    2. Then I am paranoid - what can I say - I live in the U.S. and don't have a French sensibility. Glad you do.

    1. I know. It's just a different look from what we had in our mind's eye for many months. It's partly our fault.

  11. That folding door is nifty- nicer than the swing out sort. I think most remodeling involves a reality different from the imagined product. At least this is true for us, we adjust and enjoy the change and progress made. Keep showing us photos- the tile color looks different every time I see it. It all is coming together nicely.

    1. I took today's photo before daybreak, using the flash. That made the tile look a deep brown, I think. It is nice to have somehing new and perfectly clean. We got much of our stuff moved back in this afternoon.

  12. It's incredible how things so often go wrong in more than one way.
I bet you're sick of the bathroom by now, it will be good to get it finished, even if it's not exactly what you were expecting.

  13. Whatever your original plan, the result looks splendid. Agree with the others that the brown tile is very nice, and I like that the color varies with the light.
